There are some special options in theme to customize homepage in magazine format which can be edited on theme settings page in admin panel of your site!
Go to menu Appearance → Theme options and select Home page tab.
In drop-down list Static front page content you need to select Custom posts (use below options) and click on the link select it here.
As option works only with static front page, you should select A static page in Reading settings on Front page displays and in drop-down list of Front page: select page which you want to make Front (for example, Home)
Then you need to click Save changes button in the current tab, go back to Theme otions on the Home tab, and customize the page at your discretion: categories customization, number of posts for them, display of featured posts, and other settings.
After you have modified all necessary options click Save changes on Home tab.
